There is a lot of talk about real-time and quite a lot of confusion about what it is, what it should be, and who needs it. In this paper we will give our set of definitions for real-time first, followed by a brief intro to what flavours of real-time are around - what open-source extensions there are for Linux to make it real-time. We then proceed to look at one specific hard real-time extension, RTLinux/GPL. A brief technical overview of the core concepts and how they evolved followed by some simple usage examples will hopfully clarify what hard real-time extensions to Linux can do and what they can't do - and - who actually needs them! |
