Today the web has become the most popular platform for deployment of business applications. The reasons for this are apparent, ease of deployment and use, portability, well known user interface, etc.
But developing and maintaining web applications is difficult due to many reasons. The communication between a server and a client is one-way only. The server can only respond to client requests. Also the navigation facilities of web browser lead to situations where server can not control the state of the client. Popular web development frameworks offer poor support for development of complex and rapidly changing web applications which are demanded by today business world. Add to this a mix of server and client technologies, the absence of separation between business logic and presentation plus various server and client side scripting technologies. At the end this mix of technologies results in costs growing much faster than the scope of application.
In recent years many new open source technologies have been developed to ease the development of complex web applications. All these technologies are based on dynamic languages with virtual machine and garbage collection which has proved to be the most appropriate environment for development of server applications.
This article presents our experiences gathered during development of the web appliation
www.e-racuni.com and gives an overview of existing open source Smalltalk technologies for development of complex web applications.
