Business use of Samba and it's future development
Anže Vidmar, Avtenta.SI d.o.o.
Samba is a free software implementation of Microsoft's networking system. As of version 3,
samba not only provides file and print services for various Microsoft Windows clients but can
also be integrated with a Windows Server domain, either as a Primary Domain Controller
(PDC) or as a Domain Member. It can also be part of an Active Directory domain. Samba runs
on most UNIX and Unix-like systems, such as GNU/Linux, Solaris, AIX and the BSD variants,
including Apple's Mac OS X Server.
This session will introduce you the life cycle of Samba from the early start to the upcoming
version 4. We will look at the features that Samba has now and what can we expect from the
version 4. Session will also cover every Samba roles from the simple file and print sharing
server roles to a PDC and AD (Active Directory) integration. This will not be a technical
oriented session, instead it will be shown how can you benefit from Samba roles in your
either small or large network infrastructure.
